ME

My photo
I live in southern kentucky with my husband of 27 yrs. I am starting a hobby farm with goats rabbits chickens 2 dogs and 1 cat. I love being around animals and caring for them. I have a small greenhouse my husband built for me that I grow all different plants in and I love doing crafts. Pretty much anything where I can be outside or be creative is right up my alley. My philosophy on life is a little dirt under your nails, poop on your shoes and slobby on your cheek keeps the men in the white coats away. lol. Everyone should be so lucky.

The Lawnmower and The Rock

Hello all, Well today it was only in the 80's and overcast, so to me it was the perfect day to mow the lawn  and the fence line of the goat pasture, so thats what I started doing. I mowed the pasture inside and out. Inside the pasture is where I parked the lawnmower while I went to get the pushmower to get a few spots I that needed touched up. My butt wasn't off the rider for a whole minute when it became the new jungle jim for the goats. They where all over it. I had to pull Sarge down off it so I could get on it to pull it out of the pasture. Then he jumped up on the back of it and was walking on his back legs behind it with his head over my shoulder. He is a mess. Here's a pic.

Ok, Now the rock. We had a big rock at the end of the driveway. We thought, boy the goats would love that, so we dragged it up the hill and into the goat pasture and they loved it. We sat out there watching them play king of the rock for a while. I've got pics of that to, I'll post one here but you can see more of them on my photo pages. Enjoy.

Moving the Goat Stand

We got the goat stand done and I was TRYING to move it into the barn. I got to the door and was swarmed by the crew wanting to check out the new ( Jungle Jim ) mom and dad built for them. They just don't know it yet but they may not think that its so much fun when they figure out what its really for. None of them except for Sarge has been up on it to get thier hooves clipped yet. Laverne and Shirley ( the two that are on it in this pic) will be the hardest to do, they are still pretty wild. Well enjoy your day, I'm off to go get corn for the critters.

The Goat stand

As we get older we all pay for being bent over for to long, the back SHOUTS I don't think so. Well I researched how to build a goat stand to bring them up off the ground to take care of thier feet. I started building it, then Rich got home and helped me finish it. We where dying to try it out so I went and let Sarge out of the pasture, walked him up there and Rich started doing his feet. I was bent down in front of his face talking to him to distract him from what Rich was doing. As he is so pleasently chewing his cud and I am telling him what a good boy he is, HE SNEEZED. He blew slim all over my face. It was so nasty, and stunk, at least I didn't have my mouth open at that second. As I am standing there covered in goat cud, my sweet husband is almost rolling on the ground with uncontrollable laughter. I couldn't help but start laughing to , it wasn't Sarges fault, he was just being a goat that had to sneeze. Thats what you get when you treat you animals like there kids but I can't help it. I went in and washed my face and all was good. Lesson learned, squat next to them not directly in front of them or you may get a cud shower.
Buddy our golden retriever had his ball that he is OCD about, in his mouth. He was running across the yard with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth to go to Rich so he could throw the ball. Well he ran into the electric fence wire thats around the goat pasture and his tongue is what touched the wire. OMG you would have thought someone was trying to kill him, he dropped his ball, which rolled into the pasture and ran for his life. I felt so bad for him, after he recovered from his ordeal he just sat across the yard looking at his ball in the goat pasture. All he knew was he wasn't going to be the one who fetched it. Poor baby, We got it for him. He won't go near the goats, I think he thinks they had something to do with it.lol

Scene 2 of getting started

Hello again, Well at this point we are up to almost a hundred chickens, 16 rabbits and then the goats. We got our to Lamancha bottle babies goats, Sarge and Sammi. They are both bucks, growing like weeds, and we even go out and play with them. Its so funny to watch Rich ( my hubby ) take off running across the pasture and there goes Sarge and Sammi, the race is on. Then in 1 weeks time I came across 3 more Lamancha does and then 2 Nubian Boer cross does. Well the 3 first girls we got, one is a 4 yr old momma with a month old baby girl on her side whom we named Big Momma and Sugar. Big Momma is so petted she thinks she is a dog, you can do anything with her. Sugar, not so much, She is so cute but we have some work to do with here to get her to bond with us. I found out raisins will make her forget all about her fears, she loves them. The other one that came with them is a 4 month old little girl who is the sweets thing, she loves to be petted and loved on. We named her Cinnamon cause of her color, I just adore her.
Then came the two Nubain Boer doe's, OMG. They are about a year old and wilder then sin. Its taking alot of time and patience to get them tamed down, they will never be as friendly as my other goats but I hope to at least be able to get my hands on them to be able to take care of thier feet and give them thier shots. ( They don't like raisins. ) We've do have them now coming up and sniffing our hands before they bolt, thats a little progress anyway. Oh by the way we named them Laverne and Shirley, Don't ask me , Rich came up with it. But it fits in a wierd kind of way.
And that pretty much brings us up to date. We tried to seperate the chickens into divided pens by thier breed, ya well that didn't work. Everyone flys over the fence to go visiting, and yes we cut thier wings. We have hen houses for everyone but they prefer to have sleepovers in everybody elses houses. The other day our 2 guineas started going nuts, Rich walked out there and there was a red tail hawk boldly sitting on the fence between two pens. We've had a couple of chicks missing, I guess he thinks he's won the lottery with all our chickens but I have news for him, he's wrong. I know thats all part of having animals but the fight is on.

Lets get started.

HI. I enjoy reading other peoples blogs so I thought ? Why not write my own. I don't think my stuff is anything out of the ordinary but I'm sure others thought the same thing when they started blogging. Myself, reading blogs gives me the chance to pick out little tidbits of stuff that I can impliment into my own doings. You know tips and tricks. Well I started out gettting 6 chickens last fall and was bitten by the hobby farm bug. Since that first chicken dance, I have gotten more chickens, ordered day old chicks from a hatchery. We started getting eggs this spring and I thought? All I have to do is hatch my own and I won't have to pay someone else to do it. My awsome hubby built me an incubator and I was in egg heaven. We hatched out about 30 eggs, about a 70% hatch rate for our diy bator, and everyones doing pretty good. We've lost a few to rain, predators, and poopy butt, but I think we did good for being a newbie.
Then I got a couple rabbits, 2 does. Well you can't have baby bunnies with out a buck so, you guess it, I brought Bugsy home. Since ,we have had 3 baby bunches. The first doe had 9 babies, wow. then she died when they were 10 days old, oh no. So I became foster mommy and bottle fed twice a day, We lost 3 babies from trying to find the right combination for milk. But I think thats pretty good odds considering they didn't even have thier eyes open. Also in the process of bunnies, we got to Lamancha bottle babies. Lord I think I had a bottle permantly stuck to my hand for a few weeks. By I would do it again. Its incredible to watch a baby animal you are giving nurishment to, growing and expierencing thier first adventures of life. Ok thats it for now, I will continue my venture later. Have a great day and smile its catchy.
